Job Summary
Embeds tissue, cuts, stains and coverslips slides of a quality acceptable to the pathologists. Performs special stains. Performs immunohistochemical techniques. Accessions specimens, troubleshoots and maintains histology equipment.
Essential Functions
C. Job Specific Contacts 1. General Contacts: Pathologists, pathology secretaries, nurses, physicians and general hospital staff. 2. Job Provides Direction to: Lab Assistant D. Environment and Demands 1. Environmental Demands: Possible exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens; regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases; must comply with applicable safety procedures. 2. Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands, Manual Dexterity: There is some standing, walking and lifting. There is the use of equipment and procedures demanding close visual attention most of the day. Good hand/eye coordination and deep concentration is needed for slide cutting, special stains and immunohistochemistry. Analytical and problem solving skills for special stain procedures and troubleshooting are essential. B. MISSION/STRATEGIC PLAN: Participates in activities which support the mission of the hospital C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Demonstrates the required job specific technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities. * 1. Properly embeds tissue specimens, obtains 4 micron thin sections of tissue, performs routine stains and coverslips tissue slides, gyn and non-gyn slides. 2. Troubleshoots instrumentation and/or procedural problems. 3. Performs special stains, accessions specimens and prepares cassettes, prepares non-gyn cytology specimens, makes up reagents and performs equipment maintenance and completes all associated forms, charts and statistical records. 4. Assists in the training of assigned personnel and may be asked to pick up specimens from various OR’s. 5. Prepares supplies for distribution to physician’s offices, nursing stations, OR’s. Supplies FNA cart for pathologists. * Document on addendum age specific competency. Part II: Employee Performance Standards A. CUSTOMER SERVICE: 1. Demonstrates fiscally prudent use of equipment and supplies. 2. Utilizes charge process for supplies/equipment. D. PROJECTS/ASSIGNMENTS: 1. Completes projects/assignments within projected time frames and expectations.
