This posting is for a Transportation Worker II in the Division 2 Craven County Maintenance Unit. Workers will be expected to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in extreme temperature conditions, perform manual labor road maintenance duties, and other assigned duties. Workers in this position will be expected to act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete assigned tasks. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work will involve lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work also involves walking and standing for long periods of time, shoveling, raking, and sweeping. Employees in this position will be expected to work in all types of weather conditions. This position is subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training, orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
/ Competencies: Salary Grade and Salary Range: Salary Grade: NC05 / Salary Range: $33,902 - $59,327. Management prefers applicants with the following: Working Knowledge of Standard Road Maintenance and Construction Procedures.
Experience
in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
Experience
in snow and ice removal operations. Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
Experience
in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Minimum

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates.
