Job Summary

The Medical Coding Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the hospital coding team, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant coding of inpatient and outpatient medical records. This role supports the HIM coding manager by enforcing coding standards and assisting in maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions

C. Job Specific Contacts 1. General Contacts: Administrators, Directors, Department heads and other staff, Vendors. Liaison with IT, PFS, Physicians. Other departments as required provide and implement solutions to issues encountered within coding. 2. Job Provides Direction to: N/A D. Environment and Demands 1. Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands, Manual Dexterity: Describe the physical efforts, manual dexterity and cognitive skills required for the job (i.e., eye/hand coordination, lifting, pulling, walking, concentration, analysis, customer sensitivity, etc.). B. MISSION/STRATEGIC PLAN: Demonstrates support of the mission and strategic action plan through the initiation and ongoing implementation/evaluation of department activities/plans. C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Demonstrates the technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the successful operations of the department including, where applicable, age specific competence. * 1. Support the coding manager in coordinating daily workflow for inpatient and outpatient staff. 2. Assist in monitoring productivity, accuracy, and quality metrics in the absence of the coding manager; implement performance improvement plans as needed to optimize coding with the coding manager. 3. Review and audit outpatient coded records to ensure compliance with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT/HCPCS guidelines. 4. Accurately assign codes to meet established coding guidelines, including ICD-10CM, ICD-10 PCS, CPT-4, HCPCS, and Modifiers. 5. Support coding related to denials and appeals process. 6. Ensure timely coding to meet billing and compliance guidelines. 7. Maintaining work queues within 72 hours. 8. Assist in reviewing Local coverage determinations (LCD)/National Coverage Determinations (NCD) edits to ensure that diagnoses are accurately captured and documented. * Document on addendum age specific competency. Participates in Departmental/Hospital-wide activities which improve processes/outcomes. 4. Utilizes resources to maintain and improve self knowledge and development and fosters the same for employees. 5. Demonstrates compliance with licensure/certification requirements and the timeliness of their submission. D. PROJECTS/ASSIGNMENTS: 1. Completes projects/assignments within projected time frames and expectations.

Qualifications

At least 5 years coding (Inpatient/Outpatient), HIM experience, and minimum 3 years’ experience in leadership or supervisory role. Required RHIT/RHIA along with CCS/CCSP, CPC with extensive coding knowledge will be considered. Montefiore Nyack Hospital is an equal employment opportunity employer.
