Assistant Plan Examiner, Site Safety

Job description

This position performs work of moderate difficulty and responsibility in the engineering or architectural analysis of structures and building equipment systems, and the examination of plans for the construction, alteration or repair of buildings and equipment systems related to site safety and demolition under the jurisdiction of the Department of Buildings. Under supervision, the selected individual will perform the following duties: - Review of site safety and demolition plans with related construction documents and filings. Perform audits of site safety and demolition plans and their operations. - Meet with project consultants and owners representatives to review project status and compliance with the applicable NYC Construction Codes. - Meet with customers, industry, registered design professionals, general contractors, owners, etc. to address reviews, objections, issues, and resolve related problems. - Perform audits of reviews and inspections of construction sites as they relate to NYC Building Code. - Engage in research, investigations, studies and examinations related to the construction or demolition of structures subject to the provisions of the NYC Construction Codes and other pertinent laws and rules. - Issue OATH Summonses and DOB Violations to Registered Design Professionals, Special Inspectors, Owners, and Permit holders as required for Construction Code compliance. - Testify, as needed, to support violations issued for non-compliant construction, alteration, and repairs. - Operate a motor vehicle as needed in performance of assigned duties. CIVIL SERVICE STATUS Only permanent Assistant Plan Examiners (Buildings), applicants who are reachable on the Assistant Plan Examiner (Buildings) open competitive list, applicants who passed Assistant Plan Examiner (Buildings) Open Competitive Exam 4011 or 6016, and applicants as indicated below will be considered. Candidates who are permanent in comparable civil service titles may be considered for title change under rule 6.1.9 of the Personnel Rules and Regulations of the City of New York. Candidates who are reachable on list for Assistant Architect, Assistant Civil Engineer, or Assistant Mechanical Engineer may be considered under that title. Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and either (a) one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work in building design or building construction or (b) a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university; or 2.A combination of a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering technology from an accredited college or university and either (a) two years of full-time engineering work in building design or building construction or (b) a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university, plus one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work in building design or building construction; or 3. A Bachelor of Architecture or a Master of Architecture from an accredited college or university, both of which are first professional degrees in architecture (please note that a baccalaureate degree in architecture awarded after a four year program does not qualify); or 4.A Bachelor of Science degree in architecture that is the first four years of a five year first professional degree program in architecture, or a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural technology from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in architectural work in building design or building construction.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience with Site Safety and/or demolition projects - Knowledge of the NYC Construction Codes - Excellent organizational skills - Communication skills – written and verbal – and the ability to explain technical requirements in lay terms - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook), Bluebeam, and Revit - Customer service orientation - Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications - Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people of diverse personal, educational, and cultural backgrounds in a professional manner - May be required to perform fieldwork to make on site determinations
