Job Title: Student Medical Technician - Cytogenetics Laboratory Department: James | CytoGenetics Lab-JM Job Description Scope of Position The Cytogenetics Laboratory provides Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) and Chromosome analysis on inpatient and outpatient specimens received from the OSUWMC and other local and state hospitals and physicians. These procedures are used to examine blood, bone marrow and solid tumor specimens for chromosomal changes. The laboratory also provides training for residents, medical students, and medical technology students. The student laboratory technician position assist with the daily workload by performing data entry, requisition of specimens, coverslipping, filing, cleaning glassware, inventory, and other tasks as assigned. Student laboratory technicians work under the direction of the Lab manager and work closely with Laboratory Directors, Lead technologists and other lab staff. The Cytogenetics Laboratory is staffed 6 days a week with hours varying according to workflow and holidays. Position Summary The student laboratory technologist provides clerical support including specimen accessioning, data entry, filing, responding to telephone inquiries, and other clerical support tasks as needed. The student also assists in laboratory procedures including glassware cleaning, slide cleaning and coverslipping, reagent preparation, and assisting laboratory staff with various sample processing procedures. The student performs and documents quality control, quality assurance and preventative maintenance on instrumentation. The student medical laboratory technician works under the direction of the Laboratory Directors, Lab manager and Lead technologists. Minimum Qualifications For Hire: Enrolled in a four year or two-year science related field. Those enrolled in a medical technology program preferred. Math skills required (equation solving, comprehension of percent and dilutions). Basic knowledge of metric system required. On going: Meets mandatory hospital education and health surveillance requirements. Demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions Additional Information: Minimum Qualifications For Hire: Enrolled in a four year or two-year science related field.
