Manager, Systems Engineering

Onsite Full Time

Job description

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely. We are transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice. Summary: We are seeking a Manager, Systems Engineering to build and lead our Platform Team in APAC, focusing on the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of Clio's Azure infrastructure. This is a build role: you'll be hiring and growing the team underneath you as we establish this function in the region. What your team does: The Systems Engineering Team is responsible for building and operating the cloud infrastructure and internal developer tools that power Clio products globally. We ensure our systems are reliable, secure, and scalable, enabling engineering teams to ship software quickly and confidently. You'll build and lead a growing team of engineers in Sydney, driving technical excellence while fostering a culture of resilience, automation, and continuous improvement from the ground up. Who you are: You're an engineering leader with deep Azure experience, a passion for operational excellence, and a strong focus on reliability. You embrace SRE principles: reducing toil, automating manual tasks, managing service-level objectives (SLOs), and improving system observability. You're energised by the challenge of building a team as much as running one, and you're equally comfortable mentoring engineers as you are engaging in technical discussions with architects and developers. You thrive in a collaborative environment and are skilled at balancing strategic vision with day-to-day operational needs. What a day in the life might look like: Recruit, hire, and onboard the engineers who will make up your team in APAC, in close partnership with our recruiting team. Define and maintain service-level objectives (SLOs) and error budgets for production systems. Ensure systems are highly reliable, scalable, and secure, following cloud and SRE best practices. Partner with Development, Security, and Product Engineering teams to align infrastructure initiatives with Clio's strategic roadmap. Oversee incident response processes, post-mortems, and continual improvements to reduce recurrence and mitigate risk. Drive automation and tooling to reduce manual toil across Azure environments and CI/CD pipelines. Implement monitoring, alerting, and observability standards for production and pre-production environments. Support CI/CD and developer productivity initiatives to improve the local development and deployment experience. Promote a culture of blameless post-mortems, knowledge sharing, and proactive risk management. What you may have: Proven experience leading platform, SRE, or systems engineering teams, ideally including experience building a team from an early stage. Deep knowledge of Azure architecture, services, and IaC (Terraform preferred).

Experience

defining and tracking SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets. Growth mindset when it comes to process improvement and new technologies, especially AI. Knowledge of incident management and post-mortem culture in SRE environments. Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems (Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps). Strong understanding of Kubernetes, containerization, and distributed system operations.

Experience

with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK). Solid software development skills (Python, Go, Ruby, or Bash). Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills, with a track record of attracting and retaining strong talent. Serious bonus points if you have:

Experience

managing multi-region Azure environments at scale. Familiarity with service ownership models and on-call rotation practices.

Experience

with cost optimization and FinOps principles in cloud environments. Previous hands-on experience implementing runbooks, automation frameworks, and self-healing systems.
