Staff Mechanical Engineer, R&D
Job description
Work Flexibility: Hybrid Staff Mechanical Engineer, R&D Portage, MI Join a team developing innovative medical device technologies from concept through commercialization. This role provides the opportunity to contribute across the product development lifecycle, applying engineering expertise to the design, development, testing, and verification of medical device components and systems. The position partners closely with cross-functional teams to support product quality, regulatory compliance, and successful project execution. Work Flexibility: Hybrid: candidates must reside within commuting distance of Portage, MI and be able to work onsite several days per week. What You Will Do Design, develop, modify, and verify medical device components, modules, and sub-systems in accordance with design requirements. Translate user and clinical needs into design inputs, specifications, and system-level design solutions. Plan, build, and evaluate prototypes and testing methods to verify product performance and design requirements. Investigate product design issues, perform technical analyses, and implement design improvements. Apply knowledge of customer needs, market insights, and clinical procedures to support product development activities. Create, maintain, and refine engineering documentation, including design history records, specifications, drawings, and test protocols. Ensure compliance with applicable medical device regulations, design controls, risk management requirements, and quality system procedures. Collaborate with Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical, Marketing, and Project Management teams to advance projects through development and launch milestones. Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Minimum 4 years of engineering experience in Research & Development (R&D)
Experience
creating engineering drawings and technical documentation.
Experience
supporting product verification and testing activities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience
developing mechanical or electro-mechanical assemblies using Design for Manufacturability principles.
Experience
using computer-aided design tools and applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Experience
applying material selection and manufacturing process knowledge to product design.
Experience

These roles could have travel expectations, and you must work within the country of the job requisition location. Field-based – You can expect to regularly work a majority to 100% of time at customer facilities and has a set territory or expectation to travel within a set boundary. Almost all sales roles would likely be qualified as field-based. Onsite – Role is 100% located at a Stryker facility. Some ad hoc flexibility may be available depending on role, level, and job requirements. Manufacturing roles and any role that requires physical presence at the office would qualify under this category. Hybrid – You can expect to regularly work in both an alternate workplace and a Stryker facility. Roles that are partially remote or co-located would qualify as hybrid, and the expectation to be onsite would be defined and agreed upon by your manager/supervisor.
