Day Work Days: MON-FRI Scheduled Hours: 7:30 AM-4 PM Scheduled Daily Hours: 8.5 HOURS

Scheduled Weekly Hours

40 Hourly Rate/Range: $30.00+ For positions that have only a rate listed, the displayed rate is the hiring rate but could be subject to change based on shift differential, experience, education or other relevant factors.

Job Summary

Decontaminates and prepares for sterilization, all trays, instrumentation and equipment used at the Center. Processes instrumentation between cases in a timely manner following all facility accepted practices as outlined in the Center's Policy & Procedures. Performs regular equipment checks such as autoclave QI program and maintains records/logs. Assists in moving and positioning of patients, as time permits and need exists. Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment, particularly in turn-over of the surgery suites between cases, while assisting with terminal cleaning at the end of the schedule.

B. MISSION/STRATEGIC PLAN: Participates in activities which support the mission of the hospital C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: *Demonstrates the required job specific technical professional knowledge, skills and abilities. 1. Washes/decontaminates and assures presence of all instrumentation in tray, prepare for processing and correctly label all instruments and trays used at Center. 2. Prepares for safe processing and storage of small or peel-pouched supplies. 3. Demonstrates knowledge of cleaning and processing methods, according to AORN standards and manufacturer recommendations, all types of instruments and equipment utilized within the Center for sterilization. 4. Demonstrates proficiency in utilization of equipment such as autoclave, Steris, and ultrasonic cleaner, according to AORN standards, Center policy/procedures and manufacturer’s recommendations. Demonstrated ability to process instruments efficiently and properly between cases and at end of schedule. 5. Returns sterile trays, instruments and equipment to their proper storage location after processing. 6. Regularly checks trays, instrumentation and sterile equipment for outdate or compromised package integrity. 7. Performs daily/weekly Quality assurance testing and maintains documentation/logs. 8. Communicates need to order any supplies needed for QA or processing functions. 9. Assists, as time allows, in movement and positioning of patients within the Center, utilizing appropriate body mechanics. 10. Assists, as time allows, in surgery suite turn-over by removing trash and linen, cleaning and remaking the surgery table/bed, and mopping floor with appropriate antibacterial solution. 11. Handles, transports, delivers specimens appropriately and per policy/procedure. 12. Distributes linen from linen delivery cart to appropriate clinical areas, such as blanket warmers, scrub storage, unit and surgery suite linen stock. 13. Assist with daily terminal cleaning of clinical areas and equipment at end of schedule. Notifies Clinical Coordinator of any maintenance needed. 14. Assists visitors, staff and physicians, utilizing good guest relations. 15. Acts as a resource person to staff regarding instrumentation and processing equipment and techniques. 16. Adheres to OSHA guidelines for Universal Precautions for exposure to blood and body fluids at all times, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Follows AORN Recommended Practices and Center policies at all times. 17. Participates in the orientation of new employees, students and other approved program participants. 18. Participates in Center Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of aspects of care, collection and analysis of data, implementation of a plan for improvement and evaluation of the process. 19. Conduct routine sterile processing audits to ensure compliance with infection control standards, policies, and regulatory requirements. 20. Monitor and verify sterilization parameters and documentation. 21. Assist leadership with instrument tracking, tray accuracy checks, and sterilization process monitoring. 22. Identify opportunities for process improvement and report findings to leadership. 23. Attends Center staff and unit meetings and educational opportunities. 24. Maintains all required certifications (CPR). Performs effectively in emergency situations. 25. Prioritizes job responsibilities to facilitate efficient and optimum patient care. 26. Demonstrates ability to work efficiently in a busy environment, giving attention to details. 27. Demonstrates flexibility in meeting the needs of the unit and the Center. 28. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. 29. Pick cases for next day’s schedule. 30. Help put stock away. Part II: Employee Performance Standards A. CUSTOMER SERVICE: 1. Completes projects/assignments within projected time frames and expectations. 2. Participates in committees and task forces as requested. 3. Performs other duties as assigned within classification. 4. Assists with the orientation process for new hires.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. Attended a Sterile Processing or Surgical tech training program preferred. Prior knowledge and experience working with surgical instrumentation and equipment required. Prior experience working with an instrument tray system and sterile wrapping techniques (single and double wrapping, peel pouches) required. Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills required to facilitate effective interaction with variety of health care professionals. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and to organize work in order of importance, prioritizing to achieve unit and Center goals. Familiarity with medical terminology preferred or required to complete a course in medical terminology. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages.
