Electronics Technician II – Building Security Services

Job Description Summary The Building Security Services unit within the Department of Public Safety (UMD police department) is tasked with managing the university’s security systems for non-residential systems across campus including electronic access control, intrusion detection, security cameras, intercoms, door hardware, key systems, and blue light PERT (public emergency response telephones). Under general supervision, the Electronics Technician II will assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing security systems to include but not limited to access control, CCTV, and intrusion alarm systems. Focusing on tasks such as low-voltage cabling, device setup, troubleshooting and documentation on existing buildings and new construction. The position is considered essential and is subject to a 24/7 span of operations. Normal day working hours with on-call status for after-hours and /or weekends on a rotating schedule. Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of an extensive background check including, but not limited to, an oral interview, medical examination, fingerprint, and drug screening. Employees must obtain a Trust & Reliability Clearance within the first 6 months of hire to maintain employment eligibility. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. EXPERIENCE: Four years in non-professional technical work in electronics or an allied area. OTHER: REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: General knowledge of the basic principles of electronics and the basic materials, elements, or products in the area of specialization. General knowledge and skill in the application of basic principles of applied arithmetic, algebra, and trigonometry, and the system of measure applicable to the area of specialization; in operating equipment applicable to the job according to the standard safety practices; in reading and interpreting technical specifications and drawings; in setting up and calibrating instruments and preparing instruments for testing. Ability to fabricate and assemble electromechanical and structural components and equipment from drawings and specifications; to use a personal computer; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to follow oral and written instructions; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies and/or exert force of to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
